Hey guys! This is the last of my riveting post of the 3 P's of Running and it so happens to be the easiest, whoop whoop!
If you follow the first two you are in a strong mental place, ready to take on any of the obstacles you may face and you are running with good form. Now lets spend some money. Time to get a running shoe that fits your running style and feet properly. If you are like me, it never occurred that I should go out and be fit for a pair of running shoes, I ran in whatever tennis shoes I owned at the time. Hmm, might be another reason for my previous injuries.
Chances are you are a frugal Internet shopper and that's great, I am too, but I cannot stress this
enough, get your running shoes at a local running store. I am not talking about Dick's Sporting Goods, Foot Locker or anything of their ilk. I am talking about a places like, Belmont Walk and Run, a local running store. When you go in let them know you are new to running and need help finding the correct shoe. Now if the extent of their help is, "what's your shoe size" or taking the time to measure your foot; it's time to use your new craft and run the hell out of there! Belmont Walk & Run watched me walk, they put me on a treadmill and recorded my walk and run with an ipad, looked at my old shoes, questioned what kind of running and then began to bring shoes for me to try on. They even shoved me out the door in several different shoes to run around the building to see how they felt.
A lot was learned that day. One, I was wearing a shoe to small for my feet. Came in wearing a 10 1/2, left in a size 11 1/2. I was really happy with my new shoes that I went back a month later to get a shoe to run trails with and got a size 12 that time. I was crushing my feet and never realized it. My feet clearly spread out after wearing a proper fitting shoe. When I try a pair of my old shoes, I cannot wear them for five minutes they are so tight. Crazy.
Adios, amigos! Stay healthy, happy and running!!
